Our Sustainability Policy

We are committed to sustainability and protecting the environment. As farmers we feel we are just custodians of the land and it is our responsibility to look after it.

SUPPORTING NATURE AND BIODIVERSITY

Our farm cottage, lodges and campsite are surrounded by wildlife which includes hares, hedgehogs, deer, squirrels, pheasants, foxes as well as our own rare breed sheep. Our guests are asked to follow the countryside code by following footpaths, closing gates and take-home litter. Learn more.

We have bird and bat boxes, a nature reserve which is home to a breeding pair of swans and lots of frogs, toads and newts. We have enclosed our lodges with dead hedges which provide a very important habitat for wildlife and have planted wild flower borders around many of our field margins which are a haven for butterflies, bees and hover flies. We avoid using pesticides and slug pellets.

Our camping and Glamping units are all mown individually into the meadow allowing grasses and wild flowers to flourish in between.

We are members of the Northumberland Farmers Network and the Nature friendly farming network and embrace the RHS Planet friendly gardening campaign by planting trees, using peat free compost, reuse rain water to water the garden and we make our own compost.

“We are currently grow around 80% of our own cut flowers for our guests. This can save up to 7.9kg carbon per bunch compared with those we were buying.

”SAVING ENERGY

Our farm cottage has solar panels which feed into batteries which support most of the cottages electrical usage. Our campsite is

completely off grid and has 12v power provided by solar panels to run a small amount of usb electrical sockets and lighting. Our lodges go one step further and are full 240v power supplied by a huge bank of solar panels which charge 3 heavy duty batteries and supply 100% of the cottages electrical needs. All electrical equipment has an energy rating of at least A. All the lighting is LED.

Our cottages are quiet and warm with the 100mm insulation in the walls and loft and double-glazed windows. The heating has

thermostats and can also be controlled at each radiator. We wash all our linen in house, mainly when the sun is shining and

our solar panels are producing enough electricity to power the washing machine and air dry where possible.

RE-CYCLING AND UP-CYCLING

Our Farm cottage, lodges and glamping units are fitted out with up-cycled furniture from local craftspeople where possible.

We have recycling facilities for cans, glass, cardboard, plastic and paper. We purchase re cycled products where possible.

We encourage guests to think about the three R’s Reduce/Reuse/Recycle

GREEN COMMUNICATION

Where possible communication with guests is via email, phone or text to avoid using paper.

TRANSPORTInformation on local walks and cycle routes and information on loca attractions are on display in our welcome hut on the farm. We provide secure storage for bicycles.

LOCAL ECONOMY

Supporting local businesses and producers supports our community. We have provided information in our welcome folders of local producers and farmers markets. Our welcome packs are made up of delicious locally made items including biscuits from The

Northumbrian Bakehouse , the organic milk is delivered in glass bottles by our local milkman and tea from Ringtons Tea. If we are unable to buy locally, we buy Fair trade to ensure standards are met in the production and supply of those products. We are very lucky to have a number of very good pubs, tea rooms and restaurants inn our local area and provide a list of places guests can visit in our welcome hut. We also have information on places to visit and enjoy whilst in the area.

CHEMICALS

Often cleaning products contain chemicals such chlorine and phosphates that can be harmful to the environment. We use ecover

and splosh products which are paraben and SLS free. We also use their environmentally friendly cleaning products.
