February often feels like the longest month of winter for many, which is why we have put together our top 5 must-visits, which each offer a unique chance to explore something different. Whether you want to escape the cold with a hot chocolate by a cosy fire, get outdoors for a refreshing walk along the beach, or explore one of the many National trust properties nearby, February has something special to offer.

1. Wallington Hall's Crocus Lawn

Each spring, Wallington Hall’s crocus lawn transforms the walled garden into a breathtaking sea of purple, as tens of thousands of crocuses emerge to mark the changing season. The effect is both joyful and calming, a vivid carpet of colour set against the historic stone walls and early spring greenery. It’s a moment that invites visitors to slow down, wander the garden paths and enjoy one of Northumberland’s most magical spring spectacles.

2. Winter Walk along Duridge Bay Beach

A winter walk along Druridge Bay Beach offers a refreshing sense of space and solitude, where wide skies meet an endless stretch of sand shaped by wind and tide. The beach feels at its most dramatic in the colder months, with rolling waves, crisp sea air and the quiet rhythm of nature uninterrupted by crowds. Whether wrapped up against the breeze or pausing to watch seabirds along the shoreline, it’s an invigorating yet peaceful experience that captures the wild beauty of Northumberland’s coast.

3. Amble for Fish & Chips

A trip to Amble for fish and chips is a simple seaside pleasure done exceptionally well, combining fresh coastal flavours with a laid-back harbour atmosphere. Whether enjoyed overlooking the boats in the marina or wrapped up against the sea breeze on the quay, locally caught fish in crisp batter feels especially satisfying after a day outdoors. It’s a small ritual that perfectly captures Amble’s charm, unpretentious, welcoming and rooted in the rhythms of the coast.

4. Barter Books, Alnwick

A visit to Barter Books in Alnwick is a cosy escape into one of the UK’s most beloved independent bookshops, housed in a beautifully restored former railway station. With open fires, towering shelves and the comforting scent of old books and coffee, it’s a place where time seems to slow down. Whether you’re hunting for a rare find or simply wandering the rooms with a cup in hand, Barter Books offers a wonderfully nostalgic and soul-warming experience.

5. The Market Place, Morpeth for a delicious breakfast or warming lunch.

The Market Place in Morpeth is a much-loved cafe serving a variety of home cooked food using local ingredients. Such as local sourdough toast with butter, marmalade, jam or honey a favourite of our daughter Charlotte and my favourite Seasoned smashed avocado, homemade beet hummus, roasted tomatoes, crumbled feta, omega seeds, 2 poached eggs on toasted sourdough.
