1. Wallington Hall's Crocus Lawn
Each spring, Wallington Hall’s crocus lawn transforms the walled garden into a breathtaking sea of purple. Tens of thousands of crocuses emerge to mark the changing season. The effect is both joyful and calming, creating a vivid carpet of colour against the historic stone walls and early spring greenery. It’s a moment that invites you to slow down, wander the garden paths, and enjoy one of Northumberland’s most magical spring spectacles.
2. Winter Walk along Druridge Bay Beach
A winter walk along Druridge Bay Beach offers a refreshing sense of space and solitude. Here, wide skies meet an endless stretch of sand shaped by wind and tide. The beach feels at its most dramatic in the colder months. Rolling waves, crisp sea air, and the quiet rhythm of nature create a peaceful experience, uninterrupted by crowds. Whether you’re wrapped up against the breeze or pausing to watch seabirds along the shoreline, it’s an invigorating experience that captures the wild beauty of Northumberland’s coast.
3. Amble for Fish & Chips
A trip to Amble for fish and chips is a simple seaside pleasure done exceptionally well. Fresh coastal flavours combine with a laid-back harbour atmosphere. Enjoy your meal overlooking the boats in the marina or wrapped up against the sea breeze on the quay. Locally caught fish in crisp batter feels especially satisfying after a day outdoors. It’s a small ritual that perfectly captures Amble’s charm—unpretentious, welcoming, and rooted in the rhythms of the coast.
4. Barter Books, Alnwick
A visit to Barter Books in Alnwick is a cosy escape into one of the UK’s most beloved independent bookshops. Housed in a beautifully restored former railway station, it features open fires, towering shelves, and the comforting scent of old books and coffee. Time seems to slow down here. Whether you’re hunting for a rare find or simply wandering the rooms with a cup in hand, Barter Books offers a wonderfully nostalgic and soul-warming experience.
5. The Market Place, Morpeth
The Market Place in Morpeth is a much-loved café serving a variety of home-cooked food using local ingredients. Enjoy local sourdough toast with butter, marmalade, jam, or honey—a favourite of many! My personal favourite is the seasoned smashed avocado, homemade beet hummus, roasted tomatoes, crumbled feta, and omega seeds, all topped with two poached eggs on toasted sourdough. It’s a delightful way to start your day or warm up during lunch.
Embrace the February Spirit
February may seem long, but it offers a chance to embrace the beauty of Northumberland. Each destination invites you to explore, relax, and enjoy the simple pleasures of life. From the vibrant crocus lawns to the serene beaches, every experience is an opportunity to reconnect with nature and find joy in the little things.
So, gather your loved ones, and let’s embark on these adventures together! Whether you’re sipping hot chocolate by the fire or strolling along the coast, February is a time to cherish.
Let’s make the most of this beautiful month!
